To our Council Family,
We’re greatly saddened by the tragedy that has taken place at the Scout camp in Iowa. The loss of four Scouts and the four dozen injuries is immeasurable. It is a pain we cannot begin to comprehend, but we offer our support by keeping the Scouts, their leaders and families in our thoughts and prayers.
When a tragedy occurs, we pause and evaluate the “what ifs”. Weather by nature is unpredictable, but we are prepared. We care deeply about the safety of our members and their families. We want to assure you that our camps and Scouts know what to do to ensure everyone’s safety.
Scouts practice being prepared every day. For nearly 100 years, camping has been and continues to be an integral part of the Scouting experience.
- We have extensive emergency plans that are constantly updated, learned and practiced by Scouts, volunteer leaders and camp staff.
- Our camps are regularly inspected by national and local leadership. We just completed this process for the summer and comply with hundreds of national Scouting standards. As part of that process, we have carefully reviewed emergency plans with staff, leaders and Scouts.
Because of our preparedness, thousands of young people will safely enjoy our camps this summer.
As you know, the Scout motto is "Be Prepared". The Scouts in Iowa certainly exemplified that motto as we've seen by their brave actions in the wake of such devastation. Not only are Scouts prepared for emergencies, but to help others at all times. We understand that some of you may want to help out as well. We promise to share any information as soon as it becomes available.
